Taking into account numerous analyses and expert data, it is said that more than 90% of passwords can be broken within 5 hours. It is recommended that you use different passwords on each platform that have more than 8 characters, including uppercase letters, numbers and special characters in a different order and do not keep these passwords on your computer or other data carriers.
Is there a simpler solution for us to maintain network security?
The crypto world has come up with a solution to the problem of insufficiently secured passwords and hacking or phishing attacks that force you to reveal your passwords, credit cards or bank accounts, using fake emails or pages.
Lnurl-Auth is the solution to our problems. It is not an Egyptian god that will solve our problems, but a protocol that allows you to log in to various of our accounts using a QR code with a dedicated message. This, in turn, would allow us to use the public key associated with our crypto wallet to get a unique authentication key that is only compatible with the page we want to access.
As the well-known podcaster, Marty Bend said, such a system means that websites do not need to check your information in a centralised database susceptible to hacking, you simply log in and that information is not sent anywhere.
“You no longer have to remember unique and complicated passwords to different sites, you don’t care about data theft and you have control over your online accounts. The process is made much easier, you don’t need a username, password or other information than the public key kept on your crypto wallet.
Registering and logging in to websites with the keys generated in your crypto wallet is still an innovative solution that is poorly available until it becomes commonplace, you need to keep your network security in another way.
Crispin Kerr from Proofpoint, the company that deals with corporate security informs that a password manager is the best option to keep the network secure.
“We find that many users usually use the same passwords for many sites or do not change them regularly because it is inconvenient for them. Many of them have trouble remembering passwords for many online services they use like bank accounts, company passwords or government accounts. For these reasons, we recommend a password manager.
As you can see from the research carried out, in the United States the practice of using a password manager is quite popular, as it is 44%, but in other countries, it is already quite low. Surprisingly, about 16% of users from all over the world have 1 or 2 passwords, which they use for all websites.
Are you protecting yourself online? If not, you should think about setting up a password manager.
